Summary
Jon Jones defeated Ciryl Gane via first-round guillotine submission to claim the UFC’s heavyweight championship at UFC 285 on Saturday in Las Vegas. The longtime light heavyweight champion joined Conor McGregor, Amanda Nunes, Daniel Cormier and Henry Cejudo as the only fighters in promotion history to hold titles in different divisions.
Jones, two minutes into the bout, secured a takedown and immediately took Gane’s back. He eventually sunk in the choke to have gold wrapped around his waist again.
Jones, 35, improved to 27-1-1. He has not dropped a fight since being disqualified for illegal elbows vs. Matt Hamill in December 2009 in a bout he was dominating to that point. Gane (11-2), who won the first 10 fights of his career, has now lost two of his last three.
“Y'all want to see me beat up Stipe?” Jones said in the postfight interview. “One thing I know about the UFC is we give the fans what they want to see. Stipe Miocic, I hope you’re training, my guy. You're the greatest heavyweight of all time. That’s what I want – I want you real bad.”
In the co-main event, Alexa Grasso submitted longtime flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in a monster upset. Shevchenko, who has held the belt since December 2018, suffered her first defeat since losing at bantamweight to Amanda Nunes in September 2017.
Grasso, of Mexico, was likely trailing 2-1 on the scorecards heading into the fourth round. Shevchenko attempted a spinning back fist and missed, and Grasso quickly took her back and forced her to the mat. Grasso (16-3) sunk in the rear-naked choke 4:34 into the round. She has won five fights in a row.
