Jordi Bertomeu, the former president and CEO of Euroleague Basketball, is making a comeback in the European basketball scene. According to Djordje Matic from Meridian Sport, Bertomeu is planning to return to an active role in the sport, aiming to invest in undervalued European clubs rather than assist in a new league. This move comes as the NBA and FIBA's partnership, known as NBA Europe, is exploring the creation of a top-tier league in Europe, which Bertomeu has expressed skepticism about. The 66-year-old Spanish businessperson is partnering with Demis Torres of RideOut and other companies to develop the first Multi-Club Ownership (MCO) model in European basketball. The project's goal is to unite currently independent teams under a single ownership structure, focusing on growth through improved youth programs and financial optimization. The initial target is to connect at least three teams, each valued at around 35 million euros, in an MCO status. Bertomeu's previous contributions to European basketball include his role in launching Euroleague Basketball in 2000, where he served as CEO, chairman, and president until his dismissal in 2021. This new venture marks a significant return to the sport for Bertomeu, who is now looking to shape the future of European basketball through innovative ownership models.
