The Race to Cast Brainiac is Heating Up – And the Choices Are Jaw-Dropping!
DC Studios is making waves as it moves forward with casting the iconic villain Brainiac for its upcoming film Man of Tomorrow. Last month, the studio confirmed that the search for the ultimate Superman antagonist is officially underway, and insiders are now hinting at some intriguing possibilities.
According to sources close to Nexus Point News, actors Claes Bang, Matt Smith, and Sam Rockwell are reportedly on the short list to portray Brainiac. But here’s where it gets tricky: not all of these names have been fully confirmed, as casting talks are still ongoing and no official offers have been made. Budgetary limitations at DC Studios could also play a key role in shaping the final selection, potentially ruling out some high-profile choices despite their appeal.
Claes Bang has made a name for himself with standout performances in The Square and BBC’s Dracula series. He also played a major antagonist role in Robert Eggers’ epic The Northman, showcasing his ability to embody complex, chilling characters.
Matt Smith, on the other hand, is beloved for his portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who and Prince Philip in The Crown. His résumé also includes appearances in House of the Dragon, Morbius, and Caught Stealing, proving his versatility across genres.
Then there’s Sam Rockwell, whose latest performance in The White Lotus earned him an Emmy nomination. Rockwell is no stranger to blockbuster and critically acclaimed films alike, with credits including Iron Man 2, Vice, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2017.
The film itself is a powerhouse project, with James Gunn set to write, direct, and produce. Peter Safran, co-CEO and chairman of DC Studios, will also produce alongside Gunn. Returning to their roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor are David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, promising fans another thrilling dynamic between hero and villain. Frank Grillo is confirmed to reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr., and while Superman and Luthor will continue their rivalry, there are tantalizing rumors suggesting they may even join forces at some point. Additionally, though unconfirmed, sources tell NPN that Supergirl (Milly Alcock), Lobo (Jason Momoa), and Peacemaker (John Cena) could also appear in the film. Production is scheduled to kick off in April in Atlanta, running through the summer.
The upcoming Man of Tomorrow builds on the foundation laid by Superman, which premiered on July 11, 2025, as the first feature of the newly launched DC Universe (DCU). That film not only introduced audiences to Superman and Luthor but also brought a host of DC characters to life, including Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl, Supergirl, and Perry White (Wendell Pierce). With a $225 million budget, Superman achieved an impressive $616 million at the global box office. Plot threads from the film are set to continue in the recently concluded season 2 of Peacemaker, while future DCU projects like HBO’s Lanterns and Supergirl are currently in post-production, and Clayface is filming in Liverpool.
Mark your calendars: Man of Tomorrow is slated for release by Warner Bros. Discovery on July 9, 2027. With such a star-studded cast under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran, and with rumors swirling about unexpected team-ups and cameos, this film promises to be one of the most talked-about entries in the DCU. Will Brainiac finally get the chilling portrayal fans have been dreaming of? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the excitement—and speculation—is only going to intensify from here. What’s your take on the shortlist? Do you think Bang, Smith, or Rockwell would make the perfect Brainiac, or is there another actor you have in mind? Share your thoughts in the comments!
